Welcome to the Volunteer page of our website.
On any given night, somewhere between 130,000 and 200,000 veterans are homeless somewhere in our country. In the course of a year, more than 400,000 vets will experience homelessness. It is estimated that one-fourth of all homeless people that you see along the side of the road are in fact veterans. The VA estimates that 89% of these homeless vets received an honorable discharge. Sadly, 76% of these vets suffer from alcohol, drug and/or mental health problems.
Remember, these homeless people that you see on the side of our roads aren’t reading the newspapers or watching cables news 24/7. Many of them are veterans who are not aware of the possibility of life changing help.
All you have to do is pack a couple of plastic grocery bags with a bottle of water, a nourishment bar (to be real generous add a few dollar certificates for a fast food restaurant and a phone card), along with information sheets from this web page (below). This will become your gift to some homeless person. Add anything to the bag you want to convey to this stranger.
The "ATTENTION HOMELESS VETERANS.PDF" is an information sheet that can be given to a homeless person anywhere in the United States.
This should be acompanied with a sheet for "HOMELESS HELP" for the LOCAL AREA where you are distributing your bags. If there isn't one available on this website, you can gather the information from local websites or your telephone book. Many volunteers print the "HOMELESS HELP" information on the back of the "ATTENTION HOMELESS VETERANS.PDF" sheet.
If you do not find a "HOMELESS HELP" sheet for your locale on our website, we will post the information you gather for your area if you will provide the information.
